About Peripheral Image
A Manchester based photographer that would probably be pigeonholed into the extremely broad category of “Street Photographer”.
I simply select the settings, attempt to anticipate a moment of interest (to me at least) and press the shutter release; whatever transpires is entirely subjective to myself and any viewer. I don’t (couldn’t) imitate the work of the photographers I greatly admire, but take inspiration from their output and devotion: - Olivia Arthur, Shirley Baker, Bruno Barbey, Henri Cartier-Bresson (what a surprise), Kevin Cummins, Bruce Gilden, Tim Hetherington, David Hurn, Thomas Hoepker, Richard Kalvar, Dorothea Lange, Alex Majoli, Susan Meiselas, Lee Miller, Tish Murtha, Helmut Newton, Martin Parr, Dougie Wallace.
The first thing you will be told about Street Photography is that there are no rules or red lines; the second thing you will be told, probably by the same authors, is that there are nothing but rules and red lines. Firstly, there are no technical rules, but there are sensible, statutory laws in regards where and what you may photograph. Secondly, in my opinion, for photography to truly function as an inquisitorial medium, its function is not simply to showcase selected visual aesthetics, but it may also document societal issues, rather than be a constrained reflection of current sensibilities or other photographer’s discomforts. Achieving this requires compassion, empathy and occasionally humour, the intent being to record and archive in the manner of Lange, Stryker and Evans; I certainly never cease to be inspired, intrigued and humbled by the people I encounter in the process and I hope that is evident in my photography.
